The adaptation of exotic motifs into French haute couture coincides with a Paris Colonial Exposition of 1931 that celebrated arts and cultures of the non-Western world. The careful arrangement of the motifs around the edges of the garment attests to the fact that the textile was custom made for this garment.

C. 1931 Evening cape, silk charmeuse in greige marbelized batik-style pattern. Border in brown deco-leaf motif. Edged at collar and hem with brown sable fur. Rust charmeuse lining, filigree button closure at neck.
